Sprint was not always called Sprint. In the early 80’s, Sprint was known as United Telecom, or USTel. Headquartered in Kansas City, an actual local phone company was started in 1899. Cleyson L. Brown organizes the Brown Telephone Company in Abilene, Kansas. This company's evolution over the next century created a leader in global innovation known as Sprint. United Utilities became United Telecom in 1972.
In 1984 they launched long distance service under the name Sprint. In 1988 Sprint won a major share of the FTS2000 contract for the U.S. government's advanced telecommunications system. Sprint becomes the first long distance carrier to install Signaling System 7 throughout its network. In 1989 Sprint's first transatlantic fiber optic phone call is also an industry first. His began the era of Sprint international calling and became the second largest international fiber company.
The Sprint international calling plans were offered on landlines due to cellphones was in their infancy. The rates at that time, as much as 20 times less than today, were still much lower than AT&T.
