Learn More About Cellular International Calling Rates

Cellular International Calling Rates have developed as the worldwide cellular market has evolved. The major carriers have dominated this arena being the only ones to provide service when the cellular market began. Over the last fifteen years, the cellular markets have not only changed the way we communicate, but have been the main focus of competition in the telecom world.

The old time landline carriers based the international call on a variety of variables, but mostly the cost of the International Transatlantic Cable Tariff, (ITACT). This cable gave access to carriers to and from the US. The cable, owned by British company Cable & Wireless PLC, gave the base wholesale price for access outside the US. Unknown too many, the price of an international call is set by the country you call. Even if the costs is say 50 cpm base cost of cable use, the country, who shares in the profit, may add 2 dollars per minute, thus making the call quite expensive as a profit was added. Some calls, the lower priced calls, were marked up over 1,000%. Today these land rates are overall 5 times lower in cost than a cellular international calling rate.

Today, with the cellular international calling rate, a customer is paying much more to call internationally. This is due to two factors. One, the landline prices over time have reduced due to competition, and two, the cellular networks that have been built in the last fifteen years have been built by a huge investment of hardware and time. Thus, these companies are still paying for them. In the long run, these networks will make rates very low. The reasons are they do not need maintenance of cable in the street which is very costly, and they do not depend on customer provided phones that may or may not work which causes huge service costs.

All in all, the world of cellular international calling rates will free us to enjoy a new level of service and much lower costs within the coming years. Unlike the landline phone, the cell phone gives us text message, picture, video, and downloads music and video, and allows us to search the web. These phones have already, and will continue to, change our lives.
