International phones, or an international phone, are a phone that will work in two or more countries.  What is implied by that term “international” is that it will work in another country. First, to be an international phone, you must be portable.  To be portable, an international phone becomes an international cellphone. To operate in a variety of countries they must use a GSM, or Global Systems Mobile, signal that is used around the world. Cellphones use many types of signals. These types are GSM, TDMA and CDMA. This phone number can be a number that is not native to the country it is operating, but can still operate in that country. That ability is due to the ESN number, or Electronic Serial Number, assigned to the phone. The phone companies look for a range of identification numbers from all the major manufactures, and then allow each to be recognized and used by their networks.

International phones are extremely convenient, but can be very expensive. The providers, identifying you phone as an international phone, can charge $.99 to $3.49 per minute to use our phone depending on what country we visit. That is both inbound and outbound calls. Many customers for many years have been content to pay these prices for this type of convenience until recent years. As the international cellular phone market has exploded, the consumer is now bombarded by thousands of options to save money.

Most people faced with this overwhelming choice take the products most advertised or found the easiest. They do so to avoid these high costs using international cell phones, but that is not always the best choice.
