International Calling Using Dial-Around on a Home Phone or Cell Phone
The concept of a ‘dial around’ service started in the late 1970’s. The first companies to use this technique were calling cards, and they still exclusively use this service today. The term ‘dial around’ means to dial from a home phone or cell phone, a number that takes you to a separate service from the phone you are making the call from, and then allows you to make a call on that network. Most companies give the consumer a toll free number, so while on their home phone or business phone they will not be charged to call their company.
Consumers have used these services for years. Up until the last five years, you use to have to purchase a calling card, or use an exclusive service designed for businesses. In the last five years, companies have gone online to offer these ‘virtual calling cards’ to consumers that wish the convenience of service exactly like a calling card, but with a host of other features. These features can be online billing so you can see your bill. The ability for more than one phone to use the same account. The use of web based calling. And lastly the ability to use the service worldwide without having to purchase another service in each country you travel to.
When making a call from your home phone using a dial around service, using the toll free number they provide insures you of no charge at all to make the call. When making a call from a cell phone, you always pay your cell phone plan minutes no matter what type of number you dial from local to toll free. This usually does not matter because the major cell carriers charge you the plan minutes plus the cost of the international calling rate per minute anyway.
Making international calls from your home phone using a dial around, when a VOIP service is available, does not make sense because the VOIP service is virtually free. Not quite, but lower than the home phone option. When making an international call from a cell phone, you may pay more, but you have the ability to make your calls from virtually anywhere you go. When you are at home, of course you will use your home service that is if you have one! When on the go, making an international call from your cell phone most always favors the use of a dial around.
Above I made reference to the person who may not have a residence phone service. In March of 2005, the use of cell phones passed the use of landlines. Currently there are over 200 million cell phones in the US, and only 300 million people. Most of the demographic under the age of 29 do not have a residence line, in which case they make most all their calls on a cell phone. This age group does have internet, almost 92%. How can we not be on the net? You must be a caveman!
