Learn More About the History of AT&T International Calling Service

In 1876 Alexander Graham Bell invents the telephone, and is granted two patents. With financial backing he founds the company that becomes AT&T. In 1885 the American Telephone and Telegraph Company is formed, and begins to build and operate the original long distance network. At the end of that year, AT&T completes its first line between New York and Philadelphia. You could make only one call on that line.

By 1915, the first telephone electrical amplifiers, developed by AT&T's Harold Arnold, AT&T opens the first transcontinental international telephone line to make the first international call. The new line connects the network that had been built from New York since 1885. This network in addition to the network that had been constructed by AT&T's Pacific Telephone subsidiary on the West Coast, gave national use to international calling. This service was available to all telephone customers, but the price was $20.70 for the first three minutes for calls out of New York and San Francisco. Back then that kind of money would be about $700.00 for the first three minutes. The users were large companies who could afford it.

In 1927 AT&T begins international calling service, initially between the US and London. The conversations crossed the Atlantic were via radio. Once again, to make your international call they had the capacity of 1 call at a time, and costs $75 for the first three minutes.

Moving ahead to more recent times, in 1994 AT&T completes its merger with McCaw Cellular. The newly acquired wireless systems gradually became the AT&T Wireless name we know today. This is the beginning of the ATT cellular business. Using the international calling network which was built 90 years ago, AT&T becomes the first international phone company in the world.

Some of AT&T’s international calling rates can still be somewhat expensive for customers to use their services these days. They may not be cost effective to use your existing phone worldwide. Many customers seek alternatives to these costs, though AT&T’s service is outstanding and a standard of international calling today.

For those customers who AT&T’s rates are to expensive than they wish to pay, Cellular International.com gives low rates, good service, and saves money.
